April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of preventing child abuse and neglect before it happens. In Louisiana and across the country, thousands of children experience abuse each year—impacting their well-being, future opportunities, and ability to thrive.
At CASA of the 18th JDC, we believe that prevention begins with education, support, and advocacy. That’s why we are partnering with Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana to share resources and encourage our community to take action. How We Can Break the Cycle
Children who have experienced abuse or neglect often enter the foster care system, facing instability, uncertainty, and trauma. This is where CASA volunteers step in. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are trained volunteers who work one-on-one with children in foster care, ensuring their voices are heard in court and their best interests are prioritized.
CASA volunteers help children navigate the system, access resources, and find safe, permanent homes where they can heal and grow. Last year alone, nine volunteers served 39 children through a total of nearly 300 volunteer hours —giving them hope for a brighter future.
How You Can Make a Difference
Child abuse prevention is a community effort, and you can be part of the solution:
· Educate Yourself – Learn about the signs of child abuse and neglect. If you suspect abuse, report it to 1-855-4LA-KIDS (1-855-452-5437).
· Support Families – Strengthening families and providing caregivers with support can help prevent abuse before it starts. If you or someone you know needs help, visit https://preventchildabusela.org.
